Famille Laplace

Famille Laplace

The Madiran region of southwestern France is known for dark and tannic wines made from a variety called Tannat. To the area the calcareous clay soil is favorable for the vine and thus Tannat as a variety enjoys a habitat that, thanks to its southern location, also allows the grapes to ripen to their full potential. In particular, the region's long-lasting sunny autumn guarantees that the grape's rich tannins also ripen sufficiently. The proximity of the Pyrenees makes the area unbelievably beautiful and the sheltered area rolling. This is where the Laplace family founded their winery named Château d'Aydie in 1927.

In total, the Laplace family's holdings cover 80 hectares, and there are 58 hectares of vineyards. There are a total of 12 wines in the selections, of which the reds belong to the Madiran appellation (49 hectares) and the whites bear the name AOC Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh (9 hectares). The ancestor of Maydie, which can be found in Viinitie's selections, was already produced in 1941, when Frédéric Laplace put aside a few barrels of fortified Tannat grape juice. For years, this wine was enjoyed at the end of the dinners organized on the farm, as a result of which the wine also started to be produced for commercial purposes later. In order to maximize the concentration of Tannat grapes, in some of the farm's orchards the vine planting density is up to 8,000 vines per hectare - much more dense than the standard in the area. In this way, the intensity and character of the wines produced from the orchards is at its peak.

The producer has the Haute Valeur Environnementale certificate.
