Baglio di Grìsi

Baglio di Grìsi

Derived from the Greek word for gold, Grìsi is apt to describe the vineyards of Sicily, nestled in the embrace of the Mediterranean Sea, basking in the sun and whose grapes give birth to delightful treasures in the hands of skilled winemakers. At the behest of the Di Lorenzo family, it was decided early on to focus on the island's original and oldest varieties, Grillo and Nero d'Avola. Surprisingly, international varieties such as Syrah and Viognier have also managed to create interesting characteristics in the region and have adapted well to the island's growing conditions.

The vineyards of the Monreale region, located between the coastal cities of Palermo and Trapani, are located at an altitude of 400-500 meters above sea level. The orchards lead to the valleys formed by the Belice and Jato rivers, which were already known in the Middle Ages for their pleasant climate and abundant vegetation. In the Middle Ages, the area was called the golden basin due to its abundant water areas, the intoxicating scent of Mediterranean herbs and palm trees. The Di Lorenzo family has been making wines in this area of western Sicily for over a century. As a result of the family's long-term work, the area has been transformed into eye-poppingly beautiful rows of vines and olive groves. Monreale offers the vines a wide spectrum of different soils, air directions and temperatures, but the unifying factor is also the coolness brought by the sea breezes and the significant difference in temperatures between night and day. This can be seen both in the grapes from the orchards and in the final wines as abundant aromaticity and freshness.

According to an old Arab legend, there is a treasure hidden in a cave under the walls of Baglio di Grìs, which consists of a huge amount of silver and gold coins. According to legend, coins could make all of Sicily rich. According to the legend, the treasure is not guarded, but a curse falls on even one of the coin grabbers, as a result of which the grabber gets stuck in the cave and cannot find a way out until the coin is put back in its original location. Fortunately, the legend does not apply to the wines of Baglio di Grìs, so we dare to delve into these treasures. The entire farm's wine production is certified organic, and in addition to respect for the environment, the ethics of wine consumption are also considered important at the farm.

The wines of this golden and mysterious estate are definitely worth exploring. Founded by Dr. Mario Di Lorenzo in the 1930s, the farm is also very well known as the producer of Italy's most famous olive oils. The producer has an organic certificate.
