Adegas Galegas
Founded in Pontevedra in 1995, Adegas Galegas has been producing top-quality albariños for almost 30 years. Since 2012, the estate has been owned by a group of Galician winegrowers. Although the farm's name refers generically to a Galician winery, in the hands of a new set of owners it has quickly become one of the region's best-known producers. This is especially thanks to Asunción Carballo, the estate's chief winemaker, who, among others, has been rated by Robert Parker's Wine Advocate as the number one Spanish white winemaker, and who, as a young woman, has cleared the way for several other young female winemakers in the country.
The farm's wines are made in various fermentation vessels and barrels on the lowest floor of the building, where the natural cool temperature and humidity typical of the region create optimal conditions for the wines. Harvesting is done entirely by hand, thanks to which the grapes are not crushed and thus damaged on the way from the orchards to the winery.
The farm has shelters in the sub-regions of O Rosal, Condado do Tea and Soutomaior. In the area of O Rosal, known for its warmth and terraces rising along the Miño River, the farm cultivates 22 hectares of Albariño, Loureira and Caiño Blanco. Similarly, in the inland area of Condado do Tea, 32 hectares of Albariño and 3 hectares of Treixadura grow, part as a traditional pergola. The farm's Albariño in our selection comes from the smallest sub-region of the Rías Baixas, Soutomaior, where the total vineyard area covers only 12 hectares. The area is undulating, with the top soil consisting of sand, with a deep granitic subsoil below. Typically, the region's wines are tight and mineral in structure. In addition, Adegas Galegas currently also has vineyards in the Monterrey and Bierzo regions.
The farm's total annual production is around 180,000 bottles.
