Carlo Boffa Eng

Nebbiolosta valmistuvat tilan Barbarescot. Tilan Dolcetto ja Barbera puolestaan kantavat d’Alban DOGC laatuluokitusta. Näiden ohella Boffalla on pieni palsta Roerossa, jossa perhe viljelee valkoista arneis-lajiketta.

Carlo Boffa

Carrying the family’s last name, the Boffa winery is right in the center of Piemonte’s amazing landscapes in the tiny village of Barbaresco. The house has fantastic views over the vineyards of Barbaresco and the Alps stand in the background.

The winery was founded by Pietro Boffa in 1962 and in 1996 his son Carlo took the reigns. Carlo and his wife Laura run the family winery with their son Gabriele. Carlo is in charge of the vineyards and winemaking and Laura takes care of selling and marketing with Gabriele helping out his parents. In the spring of 2010 they opened a bed and breakfast at their winery.

Carlo cultivates c. 4 ha of vineyards on which they grow the three common red grapes of Piemonte: Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto. The Nebbiolos make their Barbarescos. The Dolcetto and Barbera have the d’Alba DOCG appellation. Carlo also rents a plot of Arneis from a friend in Roero from which he makes a Roero Arneis.

Boffa’s winemaking strikes a balance between traditional work on the vineyard and modern cellar techniques. Harvests are done by hand and the wines ferment slowly so Carlo can extract tannins, colour and flavour from the skins. The wines are aged mainly in large 1500-2000 liter oak barrels. The annual production quantity is small, only around 35 000 bottles.
